10th Tolk Folk - The Story
That's unfortunately true, that if something has a beginning it has also an end. The same situation was with 10th Tolk Folk. Even though Sauron, and Saruman tried to meddle with the weather, Eru watched over us and nobody was hurt (except one nose).
Despite of the absence of tent field, there were bonfires almost every night in our friend's property. And the atmosphere was very friendly
in spite of a lot of "Evil" :D
Day One - Thursday
First participants came to Bielawa on Sunday, and the rest of them came on Thursday. One of the firsts was a group of our friends from Slovakia. The building was filled up by the crowd from the Middle - Earth in more or less typical costumes.
And the 7.00 P.m. was closer. The theater room in MOKiS was full and ready for the beginning of the annual convention devoted
to the J. R. R. Tolkien`s books.
In the beginning there was a presentation of the old photos, and the most experienced participants were able to find themselves on those photographs. Then a few movies about T. S. Tower were presented. "The Beowulf" performance was next, and the movies from preparations to "Battle of five armies", and "The Fall of Gondolin". The movies with bats and eagles for "The battle of five armies" movie were the funniest for everybody. After that some of people went to sped the time beside the bonfire,
and some just went to relax after their trip.
Day two - Friday
Already at 10a.m., first people keen on searching for Smaug`s scales were ready. At about 10.30 a.m. we went to Lonely Mountain. The judges were there and were waiting for us. They read us the rules, and the adventurers went into the forest. As we saw later, the hints were so complicated that no one found the golden scale. The winners were: Tymek Nowicki and Kuba Kosarzycki. They made an alliance, and they found 16 silver scales. The prize was the book about Sean Austin`s memories about "The Lord of the Rings" movie, with an author?s autograph. They could not decide what to do with that book, so they just take a decision to take the CDs of "The team of sober hobbits". In that way the book became the prize in the costumes contest. After the game all of us sat by the bonfire and just tasted the mushrooms, roasted by ourselves.
After that, the great group of LARP Game participants came to us.
In the same time there was the beginning of the battle game "Lord of the Rings"
At about 4.00 p.m. the "Istari meeting" started. The lectures were leaded by: Michał LM. Leśniewski, Anna "Nifrodel" Adamczyk - Śliwińska, and Anna "Elbereth" Milewska. Then the costumes contest began. This year five contesters took part in the competition. The competition was very stiff, but in the end, one of the contesters was the hot favourite to win. After the stormy discussion( just 1,5 min.) jury announced the results. The winner was Adam "Adiemus" Rabiński as a Sauron`s aquarius, second place was for Marcin Górecki (he's just 4 years old) as a Hobbit, and the third place was for Radek Drabla as a Saruman.
After a short brake there was a concert of "The team of Sober hobbits", which promotes their first album. They played all of the songs from the CD, those nostalgic, tragic, and those funny. Adam "Adiemus" Robinski - the author of almost all songs from Sorrows cycle, made a guest show. Concert was embroidered by members of "the Boromir`s company", who showed us their skills of fence. The concert was feted. Show was performed by: Jacek Wanszewicz - composer, and arranger of almost all songs, Elżbieta Zachowska, Karolina Driemel, Aleksandra Napierajczyk, Joanna Tunia, Monika "mONA" Machała, who published the CD, Jarosław "Elek Bregalad" Florczak and Mateusz "Baron" Gomółka.
The concert was the ending of the another day of Tolk Folk. We wanted to include in our movie some scenes from the Inn in Bree, but the day was so hot that the attic, where we wanted to shot the movie parts was airless, so we had to change our plans.
Day three - Saturday
The preparation to the part in the City Park began in early morning, and there were lectures led by our guests - members of Dutch band Anois in the theater room, in MOKiS. The first speaker was Vym, he told us about Tolkien`s inspirations in music, and then Marieke who told us about the Celtic Harp, and a few basic information about playing that instrument. Those who played in LARP Game had finished their game on the Lonely Mountain. After the lectures, willing participants tried to learn the Hobbit`s dance for the Bilbo`s Birthday`s scene which we planed to shoot that evening. Małgorzata "Ney" Wilczyńska - member of the COMHLAN band from Krakow was the teacher.
After 4 p.m. all participants met each other in the front of MOKiS building, and then every one went to City Park in the March. Pipes and Drums bands went with them to the City Centre. They played march music and led all people to the park. Then there were the dancing workshops accompanied by their music. Then there was the Hobbit`s run, in this year the catch was that there was no catchers at all(although there was an information about two catchers). As always, there was a lot of laugh and thoughts about the catchers. The results showed that the first place was for Kacper "Regis" Kościeński. But two contesters had to throw the Ring to the Orodruin a few times, because they had the same results. And after that, the second place was for Sylwia Szczepaniak, and the third for Kacper Stec.
And then there was the time for the Bard`s Bow Tournament. Because there was no possibility to made eliminations before the contest, the first round was an elimination round. Those who didn`t shot to the special area on the target had lost the game. Then there were sharp shoots where the first places were for the youth. And the Bard`s bow with arrows went to young Eryk Gajda from Chełmek.
After the end of the competition, there was the concert of "Marta and Rasputin" Band on the stage (not like we announced before Tamara, so we want to excuse
everybody). Their simple folk melodies with a little bit of sounds of djembe, raised the humor of everybody, although Saruman tried to made the clouds and from time to time there was a little rain.
After their concert there was the moment for the winners of LARP Game. They got their awards. The best team was BORSUKI - Eryk, Błażej, Jakub i Przemek, and the best player was Maciej "_the Aragorn" Onasz. There were also awards for the battle tournament.
We have to tell that in the same time, the workshops of the playing on the Aborygenian instrument - Didgeridoo took place. Quite
a few participants were so engaged, that maybe they will play a concert in the next year ;) . Arkadiusz Buczek who led those workshops was delighted because of his "students", and told us that he want to come next year, and he also showed what he can do with didgeridoo on the stage.
A few minutes after the ceremony our special guest- duch band Anois went to the stage. Their instruments, and the style they played, made that upon the meadow and between the trees, grew the delicate sounds like in the Middle- Earth. The sound of the Celtic Harp combined in harmony with the violin, and the guitar. Delicate voices of the singers sounded like the elfs of Doriath.
And when the music stopped, the preparations to "Bilbo`s birth day" scene began. The food and drinks appeared on the tables. Tolk Folk participants came to them and then.... cars started moving. As we were able to notice, the main problem was with the sound. Our stage was situated nearby the roads (because of the location of the City Park) and often after the "Action" word, the silence was broken by wrrrrrrrrrruuuuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Fortunately everything proceeded quite good.
So there were all of Middle - Earth creatures, and.... bearded Bilbo Bagins, in this role was the Ring. After that almost all went to the tent field to sit last time next to the bonfire, and that was the end of the day.
Day four - Sunday
Traditionally that`s the day of summary and proposals for the next year. A lot of topics were about the organization and the security of the festival. All of conclusions were written, and we`re going to realize in the future. In the next year`s Tolk Folk, the main topic is going to be "The Battle of the Black Gate"(Morannon). Together with Jacek Wanszewicz, we have an idea to prepare the festival of Middle - Earth songs, now we are trying to prepare the statute. We Also want to improve the contest of searching for Smaug`s scales(especially to the hints), to make it more attractive.
We are waiting for all proposals via e-mail, and we will answer to all messages. And that was the end of the 10th Tolk Folk,
with a lot of music, very warm, and hearty.
Thanks to everybody, especially to the lecturers: M.L., Nifrodel, and Elbereth, to Opar and Sota for being translators,
Rangers
of the North for the LARP Game, Kasi for the battle game, and everyone who helped more or less, or just because of their suggestions, they make every
Tolk Folk better
GREAT HANNON
